I need to speak at my wedding! I don't know what to say!

Help!

One of the most common fears people have is speaking in public. Somewhat ironically, this common fear can come forth on the most happiest occasion someone has in their life.

Oh what a mess!

When I was an undergraduate, I went to speech classes at night - and I would like to share what I learned with you (or a loved one) on how to best tackle wedding speeches from the bride, groom, maid of honor, best man, father of the bride, and anyone else who might want to say a few words at a wedding.

Try a speech on your family and friends

This means getting a group of your friends and family together and try to keep their undivided attention for 3-5 minutes. You could talk about anything - just make sure that the story has a beginning and end. The best way to put this is think of what you do when you are delivering a joke that has a story:

"There were three guys that went into a bar, a priest, a rabbi, and a man in a horse costume..."

As shown above, usually the beginning captures the image of where the joke (story) is going.

"They all got horribly drunk and started yelling at everyone and everything. This went on for several hours. The bartender of course was mad at this. Eventually the Rabbi and the Priest couldn't even speak anymore because they lost their voices from all the screaming. The man in the horse costume, however, kept wailing at the top of his lungs"

The middle is used to expand out the story and give it direction.

"The bartender eventually chases the three out and stares menancingly at the man in the horse costume - 'you better shut up, horse!', he says. Hearing this, the man in the horse costume simply replies 'I'm not hoarse [horse]'"

The end is used to tie things up into a nice ribbon and put closure to the story. A good speech follows this pattern.

You can now throw things at me for the horrible joke I just wrote [I literally just made it up right now].

If you feel inclined to look at a product that focus on speaking at weddings (or you want more information), I have a link:

Toasts and toasting:

I figure some poeple may be curious what toasts and toasting is, so I have included a link to a blog that summarizes it quite nicely.  I don't think I could do it much justice to paraphrase it - check it out!

Toasts and toasting

The author explains the history and etiquette that is involved with toasting.  It's a good read!
